On Rape Culture: "SHUT THE FUCK UP, BITCH!"

[update & update III below]

[update II]
I compiled  a single PDF of all the tweets I got (so far) over this--it's 97 pages long and about 12,500 words total. Taking out the extraneous twitter buttons and whatnot I'm betting it's still probably around 10,000+ words from the tweets (and their owners' names) themselves. Some are missing since I was blocking many of these dudes before I decided to start saving them, but this is the overwhelming majority. You can find a MS word doc version here[/update II]

So I had dozens and dozens of people tweet rape/death/violence threats at me today, all over these two podcasts, and call me a cunt, a whore, a bitch, a whiner, to get my head out of my ass, the stick out of my ass, etc. so on and so forth. Jamie Kilstein of Citizen Radio was on Joe Rogan's podcast the other night and they ended up having a long argument about Rape Culture, and whether million upon millions of women have or do get raped in their life-times (like, cause it's a common thing to just lie about...).

Rogan played the role of your typical Rape Apologist jackass in this little episode by diverting the coversation like it's all about "Free Speech" or how Not All Guys Are Like That or Look, Everyone Hates Rape, BUT... Today it all started when I tweeted this to Joe Rogan:
So much solidarity over all that bullshit. I can't believe I listened to or  for this long.
That was at roughly 11:30 am this morning. Joe Rogan retweeted that without comment and that, my friends, is when the fun truly began.

Let make this clear if you're one of the hundreds of lucky folks to come to my blog because I said something mildly unfavorable about Joe Rogan on twitter [and it made you want to say angry things to me:]
FUCK YOU, YOU IGNORANT JACKASS RAPE-APOLOGIZING-MISOGYNISTIC-CREEPER-MOTHERFUCKERS

I hope a feminist you know (and who may not be of the lady persuasion) saw what you tweeted today and badmouths you to everyone you know and you never get laid again. I hope they spray paint "Rape Apologist" on your front door and your car and your boss' car. I  hope the next time one of you proto-rapists creeps on a woman she sticks a knife between your godsdamned ribs and breaks the fucking handle off.

A fraction of the gems I got today:
"@phillyslice99:
@laurenalesia @jamiekilstein get over yourselves, it was a joke you silly bitch""@Bartlebee420:   of all alleged rapes, 50% are women crying wolf to make themselves feel better about being a slut "

"@thetimmalone:
@laurenalesia Rape culture is when a whore lies about being raped. Guy gets sent to jail. Whore admits she lied. Nothing happens to her""

"@Jretribe: @jamiekilstein Rape is only funny when done to people who call themselves RADICAL FEMINISTS"

@laurenalesia YOUR SO PHUCKING UGLY U MAKE ME SICK U STUPID FEMINAZI KEEP YOUR CUNT SHUT NO ONE CARES ABOUT U #BLACKBRIGADE GO FUK YER MOM"

Oh and if anyone wants to get involved by say, going to any of those persons' twitters and ruining their lives, or notifying their loved-ones/friends/employers that they're rape-loving, rape-threatening asshats, by all means, you have my fucking blessing. Gods' speed to you.

And here are some wonderful quotes from users of Joe Rogan's forums for the episode that had Jamie on:

I don't want to say anything bad about Joe's friend, but Jamie is a fucking cunt. Dude has serious ego issues. Wtf is rape culture? Like a bunch of rapists get together and live a rapist lifestyle where they rape people and pray to a rape god? Get fucking real you cunt. Jamie acts like guys never get raped. Imagine the stigma of coming out and admitting you got raped by a man when you're a young boy. I want to call out a lot of the shit he said, but the rape culture thing was the most absurd. He seems like he wants attention and he seems totally fucking bat shit insane because he refuses to listen to logic. This was the worst podcast I have listened to. It gave me a shameful feeling after listening to it."
--
Guy [Kilstein] says he's anti-censorship, yet says comedians shouldn't talk about certain subjects. My point: it doesn't matter how serious a subject it is. A joke can be in poor taste or ineffective in stirring up the right emotions in the audience, but no one should ever discourage that comedian from saying what they want to say.

Btw, I'm not trying to be a douchebag right now...but let's face it, that guy is just itching for some cock in his mouth. Dude talks like my fucking sister"
--
"Also, this bullshit about how women are scared to report rape? There are plenty of measures put in place to ensure sexual predators are dealt with properly. The emergence of DNA testing has given victims increased leverage in court and afforded them a higher probability that their attacker will be caught."
DNA testing doesn't mean shit when the victim doesn't ever go to the police because she has "authority issues".

So Joe Rogan obviously knew what was going to happen when he retweeted my mild criticism. He is well aware of who some of his followers are and how the operate when people criticize him. I'll update and post more later or tomorrow but this has been a strange experience and a strange day. I've never been on the receiving end of such a massive torrent of Internet Hate, especially around just being a woman and a feminist.

I'm tired and adrenalined out for today. I'll be more intellectual (not that I really should have to be, or need to be about any of this) tomorrow, I suppose.

[update]

The comments below are pretty fun, with lots of anon bro-dudes (presumably with lots of internalized shame, misogyny and heavily-denied Kinsey variance) telling me I should have said what I said here or on twitter, that I'm dumb (or my blog is dumb) or that I'm a silly bitch. Also present are the guys who think they're being Reasonable by telling me "Don't go to comedy clubs if you don't want to have the famous, powerful comic threaten you with rape."

First of all, this ain't about that, clods; no one is preventing Tosh from speaking, but you all are trying desperately to make sure that no one criticizes him for what he said. Exhibit 1-999999 are you tweets at me, Kilstein, your comments here and elsewhere and all the rape apologizing you're doing.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, to those who keep claiming that Rape Culture isn't realy: Thank you for proving my point by doing everything you can on the internet to tell me to go away and stop threatening your very fragile self-image. Take a moment for yourself to just look at what went down, and whether or not you'd feel the same way if I was your girlfriend, or your sister, or mother.

There's a reason this post has the title it has. Think about it.

[update III]
My gratitude for participating in an important study of social-cultural dynamics and their interplay with herd mentality. Thanks for playing, chump(s).

  3. Calling Rogan a "rape apologist" is a bit much. The Tosh joke started listing all the reasons rape is NOT funny, then the (um) nice lady interrupted "Rape is never funny", to which Tosh made his unfortunate "5 guys" remark. But to stand up for absolute freedom on a comedy stage is what Rogan was doing (& fwiw, seemingly most comedians (Patton Oswalt, etc) backed that "absolute freedom" concept). YES, in this context Tosh's off-the-cuff retort was irresponsible, but calling a man a rape apologist is in my opinion just as irresponsible (especially one as seemingly moral as Rogan).
& to be frank, saying "I can't believe I listened to Rogan & Redban for so long" is NOT "mild criticism". To me that's akin to calling someone a hypocrite & a fraud, as if you've been duped. How many times did Rogan say "Yes, rape is a horrible thing" during that podcast? Many, by my count.
I REALLY feel for you today---but the fact that "dozens & dozens" of freaks disobeyed/ignored Rogan's general treatise of "Be Nice", out of 500,000+ listeners per episode---to me does not paint nor tar a movement. When I saw Joe retweet your commentary, I saw it as giving a balanced view, including a criticism of him. It very well may not have been meant as that, & as you said, it did unleash a hoarde of asses, & he should know the power he has now (i.e., ANY movement/group will have a certain percentage of awful people).
Finally, when I dip a toe on his message board, he takes the time to *lambaste* dumb, aggressive posters...so I hope he addresses this fairly horrific thing today in a similar manner. I will be disappointed if he does not.
    Godspeed.

On the Internet there is a term, a term most people are oblivious of, 'trolling'. It means saying something you don't mean just to get a rise out of somebody.

  6. I really think you should reconsider where you stand on all of this.

The entire context of the situation makes you out to be in the wrong but you aren't seeing it. Don't go to a comedy show, especially when someone like Daniel Tosh is performing, and act like you dictate what can be said and what can't be said. Who the fuck are you to say what's okay and what isn't okay? Were it your show or if this happened in any other situation then I could understand.

    1. Who the fuck are you to tell someone where they should or should not go?

See what I did there? So, it's completely acceptable for you to tell someone they shouldn't go to a public venue, however for them to say rape jokes aren't funny... THAT'S JUST PLAIN WRONG! You are a hypocrite.

    2. You are close, but not right on. He is saying don't go to Tosh because Tosh is a famous comedian and you probably know what you are getting into if you go there. He's not saying you can't go, he's saying don't go and then get hurt by what you already knew was going to happen. I'm a vegetarian, but I'm not gonna go into a steakhouse and talk about how gross the seared flesh is. If she hated what he said, she should realize she is in a place that's not for her and just leave. If she's a feminist, Tosh shouldn't go to a feminist rally she's speaking at and bug her about rape. Each person has 'their' audience, and all the spectators should be respectful of that. Also, have the brains to not call out a dirty comic. I can't stand Fox News talking heads because they cut off their guests and don't let them talk. I can't go on there, then bitch that I was interrupted.

Long story short: he's not a hypocrite. He just didn't take the time to lay out the long version of what he is saying.

  7. Why have such a blanket fuck you (a very colorful one at that) for any Joe Rogan listeners who find their way to your blog? It's warranted for the people who tweeted their own insults to you but to be fair that's a pretty small portion of them, not all Rogan fans are like that. It seems a bit unproductive and unfair to generalize to such an extreme. Even Jamie Kilstein (still?) likes Joe Rogan.

A lot of the Rogan listeners come to this issue basically as stand up comedy fans, not all (probably pretty few) are even aware of feminist theory or rape culture and have likely never heard of it before, so the free speech part of the issue seems much more prominent to them. Fans of more offensive and extreme comedians like Tosh and Rogan especially are unlikely to equate a joke with a real cultural, social or political stance most of the time. They're probably used to humor that employs the most shocking and absurd ideas and images possible to get a laugh, they won't assume that the comedian always agrees with the things they joke about. Even if their first reaction is to defend the joke, it doesn't necessarily make them rape apologists. Being a rape-joke apologist isn't always the same thing for someone who doesn't see a connection between rape as a reality and rape related humor.

Most people will probably not see an immediate connection between rape in reality and humor. Jamie said that when he was more absorbed in the comedy world than he was in the progressive world, his outlook was much the same as Rogan's, and he admitted that there was a time not all that long ago when he probably would have defended Tosh's joke himself. He talked about how he was completely unaware of things like trigger warnings and rape culture before he went and read about them specifically. Comedy was what he knew and surrounded himself with, so that was what informed his outlook. People not well versed in feminism or progressive thought in general aren't going to make the jump from rape jokes to real rape, but I don't think that means they would knowingly support actual rape. People who are uninitiated like Jamie was aren't bad people just because they are uninitiated in a particular type of theory, everyone has to be at some point.

It's a shame the podcast didn't go differently because there could have been some really constructive discussion. The first time someone is introduced to the idea of rape culture like Rogan was, by being told that you are a part of it and that you are engaging in it right now can seem very hostile. Adding the freedom of speech issue to that, which is always a very touchy one for comedians, it's a recipe for disaster. Rogan later apologized for yelling at Jamie and shouting over him and not hearing his argument out. I don't think he looks at it like "I was being a part of rape culture" but he does see that he was wrong by being hostile and unfair towards someone because they were on the other side of an issue. I hope Kilstein will be back on the podcast sometime and hopefully a more constructive conversation can be had, but I wouldn't say that Rogan and his fans (not all of his fans anyway, some certainly deserve it) should be called rape apologists.

You've just demonstrated perfectly though that reasonable people (which you show yourself to be) can get triggered and even misread what happened or how it was slanted. Something to keep in mind with all discussions of heated topics.

Man I wish more discussion on the internet want the way you're demonstrating above.

    2. Ok...so its all about the right of the comedian..champions of free speech and matters in life not to be taken seriously. Say, why isnt there any jokes around about 9/11? There should definitely be more jokes about the holocaust, its like a huge pot brimming with "hilarious" racial jokes that comedy fans will find no link to with reality and be obtusely happy just for being amused.

As a society we have become so desensitized to violence and harassment and injustice, that not only will we not hesitate about making jokes about something like "rape" but bully those who dare to speak up. Labeling this oh-so famous Rogan guy as a "rape apologist" seems distasteful to you but I wonder what your response would've been if he had defended making jokes about hurtful issues...say...like the mass school shootings that's spread like a plague in the West? Since comedians got the free reign...why not just go all way...

He apologized in more depth during the most recent podcast (#255 with Duncan Trussell), he legitimately seems sorry for having been so angry at him. The replay hasn't been uploaded yet, and I can't remember at which point exactly they started rehashing the Kilstein argument (rough estimate I'd say about half way?) but he talks about why he was so aggressive, and even mentions other ways in which he sides with feminists, even though he still disagrees with them about rape jokes.

    4. no one is telling you to shut up. half are trolls. the other half are giving their opinions and happen to disagree. i don't see how disagreeing with you is telling you to shut up? obviously if this were in person it would be clear (the long responses you have received) that people are trying to have a conversation .

      Delete
    5. Well first, that isn't an apology to me. Second this isn't about people's "feelings," it's about a culture (American culture) that supports, condones and emboldens wide-spread sexual assault.

It's not that some people are triggered when a comic makes a hack "joke" about how funny it would be if a bunch of guys raped her right then and there (LOL!).

It is that he and many other people, like you guys, think that that is a joke, and that it'd be funny when it's a very real, on-going decades-long (probably centuries, more accurately) crisis of inequality and violence against women to promote and maintain oppressive systems of inequality and subservience.

      Delete
    6. To second anon: how many of these comments are telling me I'm a stuck up bitch/cunt? Those people aren't trying to shut me up? Are you particularly slow?

    7. True, he didn't apologize for retweeting you, but because he did apologize for his behavior towards Kilstein, I took that to mean that his retweet of your criticism was actually sincere and not intended to produce the storm of insulting tweets you received, which really were beyond his control. I can't say that I know exactly why he retweeted you obviously, but I really doubt that he wanted you to get rape threats because you criticized the podcast.

Even for those who recognize that there is culturally engendered violence against women in the world, the connection between real violence and violence in humor is not always very concrete.

      Delete
    8. The only way what you're saying could be true would be fore Joe to be a whole lot less intelligent than he appears to be. He knows how the internet and twitter works, he's commented on this type of thing happening in twitter before (and encouraged it against some folks).

He knew damn well what would happen. If he didn't want that to happen he could have tweeted at me and started a conversation, but he just retweeted w/o comment which is, in direct effect, a "Go Get This Person" tweet.

    9. it isn't that hard to figure out. they know these words will make you mad. that is why they say them. trolls don't want people to shut up. they want people to talk more, so they can troll more. they don't give a shit. they are laughing that someone got mad at some random on the internet.

i read some of the tweets and some were not that bad. no use of bad words. one said that you are probably cool with this situation aside and you wished that their tires were slashed. why is it when a man says it, it's being a rape apologist, yet you are allowed to wish violence on others? although you could be trolling. if not, it is a double standard.

      Delete
    10. Yes, obviously there will always be some people who want to troll and fuck with someone online for amusement, especially over a controversial issue (rape jokes) and I'm sure he knows that, but I honestly don't think he expected or wanted all of that shit, especially threats, to come down on you to that extent. I don't know, maybe I'm underestimating him.

But even if he knew that people would come after you to some degree, I sincerely doubt he really wishes ill on you, and I'm definitely sure that he isn't a rape apologist, even though he is a rape-joke apologist (I know through the lens of rape culture those two are seen as one and the same, but there really are legitimate, non-misogynistic reasons to defend jokes, even jokes that center around an abhorrent reality).

    11. This trope needs to end. Tosh can say whatever the hell he likes, he even has an entire television show to say what he wants.

What's happening here is people attacking me (and others in similar situations) for saying things like "Hey Tosh, you're 'joke' was fucked-up and unfunny" like that is trying to say "TOSH CAN NEVER SPEAK AGAIN!!!"

Here's a Jezebel article on how rape can be incorporated into humor in an intelligent (and non-damaging) way http://bit.ly/OBFzpO

People are perfectly fucking free to say whatever the hell they want, just like it's ok for me to say "Hey, fuck you, asshat" when they say shit I don't like.

Notice how I haven't deleted a single comment on this page, no matter what anyone has anonymously written?

    12. well if i wanted to be mean I could call you an "asshole". it means im being aggressive though (which i try not to be). it's ok to be angry, but i wouldn't recommend a life filled with anger.

      Delete
    13. I agree, the outrage fans have over people not liking a joke is often ridiculous. The way people have attacked you, and others who say similar things, is fucked up and ridiculously extreme. Criticism of Tosh is completely warranted. But the whole free speech in comedy vs. free speech in reactions to comedy is only the first, most basic layer of this whole controversy.

There is good reason to take issue with how rape is treated in comedy, absolutely, but there's also good reason to take issue with certain reactions (even though both of these are completely fair, free speech wise), without being an asshole about it. As a fan of comedy, I do take issue with some feminist critiques of controversial jokes (though it fucking sucks to have most people on my side act exactly like the assholes they're made out to be). But saying that Rogan and his fans (though some of the fans deserve the insult) are actual rape apologists is being a bit too black and white about the whole issue I think.

What many comedy fans react negatively to in feminist critiques is the idea that humor has an intrinsic link to real world sexual violence. Saying that it all plays into one massive rape culture, and that a comedian's jokes are part and parcel of the same problem as a legal authority ignoring a rape accusation, or a rapist committing a rape for that matter, seems unnecessarily extreme. Equating a reaction to a rape joke (laughter) with a reaction to a real rape is similarly extreme. Treating rape jokes as completely different from other trauma related jokes also seems problematic. Of course people are entitled to think or say those things about offensive humor and the audience that likes it, but labeling them/us all as misogynists across the board seems unproductive.

I do sincerely appreciate that you haven't deleted anyone's comments.

People DO connect all of this feminist complaining with reality though.. Because you are talking stats and going deeper into the situation than a comedian would..

if i criticize the idea, how does that suddenly make me a rape apologist or a pro rape supporter? it feels like im having a conversation with a religious person when i say i don't believe in their god. it feels like im talking to the extreme right or extreme left of the political spectrum. demonizing opposing opinions doesn't seem rational to me.

in the late 80s and early 90s, we had culture warriors saying music and art are causing violence, yet crime has been going down even though they are allowed.

If i laughed at a racist joke on the chappelle show, does that make me racist? no. could it make a small percentage feel like it is ok to be that way? yes. is this because of hate culture? no. it's because some human beings are morons and they will continue to be morons no matter what the influence is.

are scarface and 2 pac the sole reasons why inner city kids became involved in gang culture? no. there are a lot of factors. parenting. money. the education system. was the batman trilogy the cause of the aurora shooting? no. it was a trouble individual.

try to be pragmatic. just because someone disagrees with your ideas doesn't make them hate women. im sick of the gender paradigm feminists constantly enforce instead of looking at people like individual persons. human beings.

  19. Saying these comments are "jokes" or "irony" is ignorant, privileged bullshit. They are silencing tactics used against me and Kilstein and the girl who stood up to Tosh and virtually every other person (usually women) who speaks up about sexual assault (theirs or generally) or about rape culture.

    1. I said most. some are seriously mad, some are trolling. How do you not expect someone's emotions to be raised if you are aggressive in the first place (basically calling people pro rape)? if you disagree with feminism, you try to fit your predisposed intellectual template on an individual. i try not to be ideological and take something for what it is. how do you not expect someone to get mad if you lump them in with rapists?

I'm trying to have a conversation with you, but I can sense some sort of hostility to the way I think. treat people like people. you are enforcing gender stereotypes even though you think you are trying to fight them.

Do you know what it's like to have the world around you be hostile to your very existence? To tell you that at any moment you could become the victim of terrible violence merely because of your gender? Do you really understand the pervasive fear that comes with that?

Let's just all tell non-whites in America's cities to "leave aside" their race, it's them focusing on racial issues that leads to cops brutalizing and murdering hundreds of young black men every year.

anyone can be a victim of violence for whatever reason. looking at humans as individual beings a part of the human race is the only way to look at it. if you go off and try to dissect the reasons by race, gender, and class, you will become what you hate.

You need to stop wearing those rose tinted glasses that makes you think that just because *you* aren't racist or sexist, the rest of the world is going to be the same. The comments here and the original tweet war prove that a lot of men have problems with accepting women as anything other than sexual objects, let alone equals. You may as well accept that there are assholes in the world. And that it's time to show these people that they *are* being assholes.

  30. If Tosh said "Wouldn't it be hilarious if five guys lynched this person" to a black audience member, his career would be dead, and I dare say even Joe Rogan would say Tosh didn't deserve a following after doing that.

At some point the men responding to Michael Richards' "He's a nigger" act ceased to be hecklers to us. Watch the video, the 'hecklers' say some hurtful things, but we saw them as people; considered the shit they'd been through, and that for us superseded the importance of the Sacred Pulpit of Comedy. Jokes are just another way of communicating an idea. Rogan saw the flaw in using the word "Faggot", even if he didn't mean anything destructive by it, and he retired it from his act. Why can't that logic be applied to this?

I think there's something messed up about the fact that lynching crossed a line for us, but we're defending gang rape jokes so hard that we're willing to devote our time to think of rape threats to throw at human beings just for identifying as a Feminist, an ideology it sounds like a lot of you have spent zero time actually looking into (guys, every Feminist I've engaged with sees men as valuable and beautiful parts of life. If you don't want to believe it, guess I can't help you).

In the Klitstien podcast Rogan talked about the difference between words and actions. Tosh has had a segment on his show where he encouraged his viewers to tape themselves sneaking up behind women and touching their belly fat, and then send the video to him. Richards made a joke about an imagined scenario and we (rightfully) excommunicated him; for Tosh, actually assaulting women is part of his comedy, and so many people are devoting energy to defending that. If you don't at least appreciate where people might connect that to an idea about rape culture, my God your brain is lazy.

I could only see myself defending Tosh if I was unaware of this, or if somewhere in me I didn't receive women as fully developed human beings like myself.

Lauren is getting a lot of flak for alleged man hate, which is an assumption based on very little evidence. You don't know this person very well and neither do I. While I agree that it's unhelpful to tell people to fuck off and die, I have to ask why some folks on here are investing their time in pointing that out to Lauren, and not to one or two of the dozens of people who decided to send her rape/death threats on Twitter. I think where some of you are choosing to place your focus actually proves everything Lauren is saying. Next time someone has dozens of rape threats levied at them in one day, at least maybe wait a week or two before calling them a 'bitch lol'?

Anyway, make that three new fans of this blog.

You seriously believe feminism hasnt achieved anything? 2. Because I only got my twitter account and my blog last night and have never encountered the internet before.

Not all trolling is just trolling. There is context here that is quite obvious to all involved if they actually want to acknowledge it.

I said (and continue to say) positive statements about feminism, against rape culture, patriarchy and silencing tactics. Because I have said these things I am best by dozens of people calling me all kinds of names, making threats, and generally being fuckwads.

Calling me a bitch or a cunt is a gendered attack. Notice how none of my insults are gender-based?

If this were a blog about basketball, and my gender were unknown (or assumed male) would the response be the same? Would all of this be happening? 99.9999999% chance that it wouldn't be.

When a woman speaks out, and then has a veritable mob of men attack her for a full 36 hours--attack her appearance, her intelligence, her right to speak, her validity as a human, to make violent threats/jokes/fantasies--then it becomes an issue about that feminism speaks to. What's happened with my twitter and this blog post is exactly the type of shit people are talking about when they talk about "Rape Culture." How do you guys not see that?

A few of you seem like people who just honestly don't know--which isn't surprising, since these issues aren't really things you have to worry about or deal with yourselves, being (predominantly) cisgendered white dudes.

But the vast majority of you are super-mega-assholes who are hiding behind the concept of "jokes" or "messing with folk on teh interwebs" because the things I (or Jamie Kilstein or any feminist) say threaten your ego and your self-perception in a way you can't deal with like emotionally healthy people

    5. "exactly the type of shit people are talking about when they talk about "Rape Culture." How do you guys not see that?"

I think, and this is kinda the point, that people absolutely do see it, and are purposefully playing into it, ya know, for teh lulz and what not. They know that you hate rape culture, you've told them things that you think perpetuate it, they want to make you mad, they'll post those things and play right into it. You've certainly mentioned it enough times now that even if they didn't know at first, they certainly do at this point.

Is it at all funny to anyone that feminists set up their understanding of rape culture in such a way that if someone were to say "I'm skeptical about this whole 'rape culture' idea," even in a respectful, halfway intelligent way, they're (absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt) proving rape culture? Very handy to have an idea that no one can even possibly refute/debate/so much as mention without proving it.

Inb4 feminist magic buzzword that roughly describes this sort of argument (because it's an obvious one to make against a pretty massive hole in one of their main tenets) which makes it argumentatively sound to just dismiss the point entirely.

I was actually nice to you on twitter and tried to engage in a healthy debate and you threatened my life because of it. Murder is worse than rape. Feminism is a bane on society like the KKK or the black panthers. It is a group bent on pushing the agenda of a gender with no regard to the rest of humanity, in fact there is a lot of hate thrown at the other gender. You need to stop thinking you need special treatment because you are a woman, because all you are going to get back is resentment. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps like the rest of the human race and deal with it. There will be no pity parades for you on this day, you made your bed. 39. It's hard to speak truth to power, Five by Five. Thank you for doing it. Reading your blog entry was great (a bit late, I just came across it today), but the comments section was disheartening (an understatement). I realized towards the end that the whole comment section serves as a metaphor for the broader rape culture. You have the angry troll men screaming "fuckyoubitch, shutthefuckupcunt, hopeyougetrapedyoustupidfeminazi..." etc etc etc for pushing back against clear misogynist BS. Then, a few male (or at least male-identified) authority figures come around and tell you that you were clearly asking for it, you had it coming, what did you expect? They follow that up by reinforcing those age-old sexist comments about irrationality, the lack of importance of what you're talking about, your lack of knowledge, all while obscuring male privilege and not mentioning that by every objective indicator possible, men yield enormous amounts of political and cultural power in the US (pay scale, sex of those in political office, rates of domestic violence and sexual assault, even who/what wins Oscars).

The most recent quote, to me, is the equivalent of a man telling a female waitress to "Smile, you'll be so much prettier, and life isn't that serious."

Let's clear up a few other misconceptions: Sorry dudebros, but holding a fucking door open for a woman is NOT EQUALITY and it sure the FUCK ain't matriarchy. Also, the primary barrier to male sexual assault victims seeking help is NOT WOMEN. It is OTHER MEN. Do men experience oppression in our society? Certainly, but not by virtue of being men. Rather, the source of that oppression is their class, race, ability, sexual orientation, and/or nationality in a patriarchal system in which men compete with other men. Finally, "humanist" has been thrown around a bit too much. That word doesn't mean what you think it means. There are millions of humanists out in the world, and many of them are feminists as well. See iheu.org, or, even better, GO READ A FUCKING BOOK.

Keep fighting the good fight, Five by Five!

  40. Jesus... I know that every time a woman has the temerity to talk about rape on the internet, the Testosterone Patrol gangs up to take her down and stop her saying mean words (because they believe in free speech or something - the message is a little fuzzy) but it still sickens me every time.

What never stops being funny is the sincere belief many of them hold that this misogynistic hatefest will actually convince people that the feminists are totally wrong and rape culture and misogyny totally aren't a big deal.

Honestly, "I deny the existence of rape cultuire, and I will threaten you with rape to try to make you stop talking about it" must have the highest frequency-to-logic ratio of any popular argument ever employed in the history of human rhetoric. (Infinity to zero is a proper ratio, right?)

Five by Five, I admire your guts. It takes incredible courage for a woman to speak out online and let the abuse roll in uncensored to prove a point. I wish you all the good fortune in the world, and I also hope that everyone who threatened you with harm dies in a fucking fire.

Would he still laugh at rape jokes after visiting that woman in the hospital and seeing her after she was violated in the worst way imaginable? Go ahead and try to tell me it's JUST a joke and to relax.
Sadly I have had to hold someone I love after her rape by some sick fuck and tell her that she was still beautiful and as important as ever.
Why is it so hard for people to understand that it just isn't something that should be made light of in any way because it contributes to a mindset that makes women appear to be less than men. That mindset contributes to an overall behavior by too many males that believe women to be lesser than men. Try telling your Mom she is less than you are and that it's worth a laugh if she were to be raped tough guy!

Thank you for being a reasonable person, that does not enjoy making fun of a human being being violently forced to have sex against their will witch leaves them broken and traumatized. Yes, thats right, anyone who thinks rape jokes are funny, you are dumb assholes. you deserved that insult, and if you think you didn't, dont start complaining, because at least you are not experiencing the traumatic aftermath of being raped, you assbutts.

  43. You have a new fan in me as well. It's obvious and sad when someone's fans are forced to legitimize rape to protect their celebrity. I don't know who Joe Rogan is or Mr. Kilstein but I will be looking him up to give my support as well. I grew up a white middle class princess and that didn't protect me from a boy at school hitting me holding me down and taking my virginity. My father told me I was asking for it. My mother wanted to pretend it didn't happen. He assaulted 15 more girls before the school expelled him. No charges were ever filed. Tell me again about how opening my car door makes me privileged. Tell me when the blood gushes out of a hole of yours after someone bends you over how this isn't about gender. 1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted. 400,000 rape kits are currently sitting in storage that no one ever even bothered to test. Some are up to 20 years old. Does this lack of interest happen with any other crime? Women are raped and told by judges that it was because of her skirt. So a quarter of women assaulted Tosh makes a joke that could cause nightmares for about an eighth of his audience and this woman gets threatened for pointed out that's bad. Who are the ideologues here really?

  44. "So Joe Rogan obviously knew what was going to happen when he retweeted my mild criticism".

So Twitter User X already knew what was going to happen when she tweeted me.Seriously. What kind of mittens do you need delivered?

You know what I'm not going to do today? Not insert myself into an argument between 2 professionals in a field I'm not involved in myself, then complain about the flack I receive for inserting myself in that.
Kind of fkn obvious why, eh?

  45. Thanks for this blog entry.

You know, even though it pisses me off to read comments from those who defend rape jokes and react angrily to the term "rape culture", when I step back and look at the big picture I'm glad to see all this going on. I'm a firm believer in the Gandhi quote, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win". We are firm in the fight/laugh phase right now.

When I was younger, shit like this was totally ignored and dismissed outside of academia. I'm glad that those who would defend/deny rape culture are getting pissed. That means they're listening, and that they realize they no longer have the luxury of silent complicity. They can't just dismiss their opponents anymore -- now they actually have to put words to their defense of rape culture. All that's left to do is just give them enough rope...they'll continue to hang themselves.

And we'll continue to fight. Fuckin' A.

  46. I'm not sure what's a feminist, and will be reading that up. But I do know that I'm sick of men presuming you're inferior in driving, in mechanics, in logic, in academia, in intelligence, just because you're a female. My vagina has nothing to do with these skill sets. I'm sick of men pretending rape culture doesn't exist. I'm sick of people objectifying women. And the above comments attacking the OP for expressing her opinion shows me just how much we need to change public perception towards women - both by men and women.
